Giffard Controls designs and manufactures high-performance steam conditioning equipment for demanding power generation and process applications. Every Giffard Controls product - whether forged, cast or fabricated - is produced using advanced manufacturing facilities equipped with high-precision CNC, vertical machining Centre (VMC) and horizontal machining centre (HMC) technology. This integrated capability enables Giffard Controls to achieve close dimensional accuracy, consistent workmanship and dependable project delivery.
The Giffard Controls desuperheater range includes Venturi Desuperheaters, Attemperator Desuperheaters, Mechanical Atomizing Desuperheaters, Steam Ejector Atomizing Desuperheaters, Annular Venturi Desuperheaters and Surface Absorption Desuperheaters. Each Giffard Controls solution is custom-engineered to suit the required steam pressure, temperature, flow range, water conditions and installation geometry of the project.

What distinguishes a well-engineered Giffard Controls Venturi Desuperheater is the integration of throat geometry, diffuser profile, nozzle arrangement and control strategy. In a correctly sized installation, steam accelerates through the converging section, water is introduced in the region of highest turbulence, and complete evaporation takes place within the designed downstream straight run. Depending on duty and configuration, outlet temperature can commonly be controlled to within approximately 3–8°C of saturation, with standard Venturi turndown typically in the region of 4:1 to 10:1, and higher performance available from bespoke arrangements.
For plant engineers, the advantages of a Giffard Controls Venturi Desuperheater are clear: no moving parts in the core body, good resistance to wear when properly laid out, and in many cases no requirement for spray-water pressure substantially higher than the steam pressure itself. These qualities make the design particularly attractive where reliability, predictable performance and ease of maintenance are more important than extreme turndown.
Giffard Controls desuperheaters reduce steam temperature by bringing superheated steam into direct contact with finely atomised water. Water enters the desuperheater and is preheated within the circulatory chamber around the water diffuser tube. It is then introduced as multiple fine jets, allowing the steam flow through the throat to complete the final atomisation process. After leaving the throat, the steam-water mixture enters the main steam flow in a fog-like condition, where final heat transfer is achieved without impingement on the pipe wall, ensuring highly effective desuperheating with minimal pipe wear.

Giffard Controls desuperheaters can be manufactured from a range of materials and alloys to suit project duty. Standard construction is commonly carbon steel for temperatures below 800°F, with chrome-molybdenum steel typically used for higher temperatures. Equipment can also be manufactured to relevant ASME or ANSI codes and supplied with special non-destructive testing where required.
Our view is straightforward: a Giffard Controls desuperheater should be selected as a fully engineered steam-conditioning component rather than as a commodity fitting. The correct solution depends on steam pressure and flow range, inlet superheat, available water pressure, required approach to saturation, downstream piping geometry and whether pressure reduction is separate or integrated into a PRDS arrangement. When these variables are matched correctly, Giffard Controls delivers efficient thermal control, reliable equipment protection and consistent process performance.
Giffard Controls combines practical steam-conditioning expertise, robust engineering capability and project-specific design to deliver desuperheaters that perform reliably under demanding operating conditions.
