Steam passes through an application-specific Giffard Controls pressure-reducing trim, with multi-stage reduction used where required to manage severe differential pressure, steam velocity, noise and vibration. Cooling water is then introduced through an integrated or associated Giffard Controls desuperheating system, producing fine droplets for rapid evaporation and stable outlet temperature control.
Pressure and temperature transmitters communicate with the plant control system, which modulates the bypass valve actuator and spray-water control valve. Giffard Controls High-Pressure Turbine Bypass
A Giffard Controls HP bypass valve normally directs main steam to the cold reheat system during start-up, shutdown or turbine unavailability. The valve reduces pressure and controls temperature so that the conditioned steam is compatible with the reheater and downstream cycle. Spray water may be taken from the feedwater system, with dedicated control and isolation arrangements used to improve temperature regulation. The HP bypass supports rapid plant response but does not replace the boiler safety valves.
Giffard Controls Low-Pressure Turbine Bypass
A Giffard Controls LP bypass valve generally routes hot reheat steam towards the condenser or another approved destination. Coordinated pressure reduction and desuperheating keep the discharge within the permissible limits of the condenser, piping and auxiliary systems. Condenser-protection logic takes priority and can close the Giffard Controls LP bypass valve if cooling water is unavailable or safe downstream conditions cannot be maintained.

Giffard Controls turbine bypass valves can be supplied in angle-pattern or project-specific configurations, with forged, cast or fabricated bodies in suitable carbon and alloy steels. Severe-service trims, replaceable seats, hardened or specialist materials, robust stem guidance and top-access internals can be selected to improve durability and maintainability. Butt-weld and flanged end connections are available to suit the installation.
For demanding duties, Giffard Controls can incorporate steam-assisted atomising desuperheating to promote rapid evaporation and reduce the risk of water impingement on downstream pipework. Pneumatic piston, hydraulic or electric actuators can be provided with positioners, solenoid valves, limit switches, hydraulic power units and rapid-opening or rapid-closing functions. Giffard Controls can also integrate pressure and temperature instrumentation, spray-water control, interlocks and DCS or PLC interfaces.
